Language, Sense and Nonsense
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Publishers (October, 1986)
Average review score:

A brilliant, but much-neglected, critique of linguisticsBaker and Hacker offer an incisive critique of modern linguistic theorising and philosophical conceptions of language based upon this mode of reasoning. Drawing heavily, but productively, upon the later logical work of Wittgenstein, they show, decisively in my view, that the Chomskian project is through-and-through misconceived, as are the philosophical works which ensued from his baleful influence. Applying recursive-function-theoretic concepts to the analysis of parts-of-speech (syntax), Chomsky believed that his analyses would cast light upon the universal grammar of all human languages, thence upon the essence of human mentality. Baker and Hacker (sometimes mercilessly) attack the very bases of such a project, including its apparently deep motivating concern: the new sentence production phenomenon. Nowhere in contemporary critisicm of modern linguistics can you find a more sustained, informed and well-argued attack upon the mythologies being perpetrated by the MIT linguists than here in this wonderful, scholarly and remarkably wide-ranging book.

Le Corbusier an Analysis of Form
Published in Hardcover by Routledge mot E F & N Spon (May, 1996)
Average review score:

Clear, persuasive analyses presented with styleProf. Baker's presentation of Le Corbusier's architecture as a series of progressively related formal compositions is comprehensive, extraordinarily clear, and wonderfully executed. The bulk of the book consists of Baker's own drawings and diagrams which lend a consistency and lucidity to his analyses of form. Each project is desrcibed in the same format, with unusual attention to both the physical and biographical context in which it was built or proposed. The investigation of buildings as formal compositions gives a persuasive critical consistency to Corbusier's ouvre from the earliest Swiss villas to the didactic purism of the international style to his later, more mature expressions of the interaction of spirit and matter. This study, in its thoughtfulness and elegance, is invaluable to any student of architecture and will provide insight not only into the techniques of formal composition but into the mind of one of the real heroes of modern design.

Leader's Guide

Really brings together the secular & spiritual defensesAfter searching numerous places for a program that people can relate to and attract to, this one hits the spot. Its combining of topics and the way it identifies its principles allows for a real flexible program. It allows for people currently in 12 step secular programs to see the need for Christ in their lives. It also allows for suffering Christians to see where they need fellowship with others like themselves in order to overcome. We are adopting this program by year end 1998.

The Legend of King Arthur
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (June, 1990)
Average review score:

A Fantastic IntroductionI can still remember reading this book as a child, gazing at the pictures and dreaming of far-off Britannia. It was the book that led me to fall in love with the legend of King Arthur, a slight obsession of mine that has brought me to such great books as The Dragon and the Unicorn and the Pendragon Cycle. This book is fantastic for anyone who would like to start learning the legends of the Round Table, Merlin, Guinevere and Lancelot, and of course the once and future king himself, Arthur.

Let the Children Come: A New Approach to Children's Sermons
Published in Paperback by Augsburg Fortress Publishers (June, 1992)
Average review score:

Excellent resource for sermons for all agesThe basis of the sermons in this book is that people learn best by doing, rather than by being talked at. The sermons are intended for children, but some may be applicable to all ages. They might be considered more like activities than sermons. This book is not 'how to' or theoretical. It is practical, detailed activities for teaching the Bible to children by engaging them in activities through which they will feel what the biblical characters felt. While the book provides details for the conduct of the activities, you must be flexible when dealing with children because they will not always follow the 'plan' for the activity! This is an excellent resource for anyone teaching Christianity to children of any age.

Letters of Mary Baker Eddy to Augusta E. Stetson, C.S.D
Published in Hardcover by Emma Publishing Society (December, 1990)
Average review score:

Letters of Mary Baker Eddy to Augusta E. StetsonThe letters of Mary Baker Eddy to Augusta E. Stetson, C.S.D., written between 1889 and 1909, are reproduced from the Manuscript Collection in The Huntington Library, San Marino, California. This priceless collection of letters, written over a period of twenty years, breathes the spirit of genuine Christian Science, and reveals Mary Baker Eddy's love for her "best beloved" student, Augusta E. Stetson. Original publication of Emma Publishing Society. Burgundy cloth; color portrait; 113 pages; Emma Publishing Society, 1990.
My only real gripes with this book are that sometimes the text is really difficult to read with the color combinations that were chosen, and that William Baker, who wrote much of the book, injects too much of his own autobiographical information. I know that for part of it, he is trying to establish his credentials as a fashion consultant or whatever he is, but it comes off as incredibly self-absorbed a lot of the time. Quite frankly, I'm surprised that Kylie, as the star of the book, allowed that to happen. I would have given it only 4 1/2 stars if that were possible, but I rounded it up to 5 to be fair.
These are minor complaints however...it really is a great book. I had to go watch my Kylie Tour DVDs again after reading the it, taking into account all the tidbits I had learned about what went on. Plus, the photograph collection really is amazing. Looking through the pictures that chronicle her evolution over the years, it is really easy to see why some call her "The Australian Madonna" here in the States. No Kylie fan should pass this book up!
